We have just been informed of the following per Cincinnati Parks:
To Disc Golf Course Users:
Yesterday we received some very discouraging news regarding budget from City Managers Office. The proposed reduction of parks budget is severe if not catastrophic. It will include closing of Mt Airy Forest on July 1, 2013 including the disc golf course. If you or any other disc golf course users want to speak on the park boards behalf please plan on attending the Public Budget Hearings at Duke Energy Center 6pm on Monday 5/13/13. Myself and the other Club Officers will be attending to speak on our side of things but please feel free to attend for a show of support. There are many other parks that will be closing, like Caldwell and Seymour, plus all restrooms will be closed, all floral beds, and mowing cycles cut in half with other definite cuts I don`t know of yet. What this means is, if something drastic doesn`t change in the budget very soon, No more Mt.Airy DGC for at least a year and probably more. Baskets, signs and other course materials will be removed and stored until the park reopens sometime in the future. Please help us spread the word, we will be planning for the worst and hoping for the best.

The next course challenge series is at Kathryn Stagge Marr Community Park in Goshen Ohio. The 275 Milford exit maybe closed come this saturday, please take the Milford Parkway exit, continue onto the Milford Parkway off the highway, it will cross over rout 50 and turn into 131. Take 131 to 132, turn left onto 132. Take 132 to Woodville Pike, turn right onto Woodville Pike. Take Woodville Pike to Goshen Road, turn left onto Goshen Road. Continue onto Goshen Road, the park will be immediately on your right after a dip in the road and a 90 degree turn to the left. If you drive by the shools you've gone too far. If you are coming from route 28, the course is on your left after the school. Look for the little white house and the red barn, there is a Park sign as well. Friendly reminder, this is a new course and it is still in development, temp signage will be in for the event and/or provided via handhout. The rough is very rough, so stay on the fairways and watch your footing, we have taken out many stumps yet some remain, as do holes and divets. Not all of the tee placements are in place, the layout on Saturday will be an intermediate layout as many short and long tees are not in place at this time. I recommend long pants, as you play, if you come across any sticks it would be greatly appreciated if you could throw them to the side. The park will also be hosting a haunted trail and corn maze at night, so if your own round isn't scary good or scary bad, I encourage you to stay for the evening and have some fun!

On a warm day, 45 people showed up to battle the beast that is Idlewild. We played two rounds of the original 18. The first from the long tees, and the second from the shorts.
Brand new member Tim Blanchet in his first CC won the Rec. division with a score of 148. Ryan McMath took home the win in the Intermidiate division with a 145. "Awesome" Bob Roberts won Advanced Masters with a 146, and nobody wanted to play in Advanced.
Masters and Open had interesting finishes. In Masters, Jeff Eades and Steve Mahl were tied at 139, after the two rounds and went to a playoff that Jeff won. Because of the number of people in the division they were also the only ones paid. In Open we had eight people, three being paid. There were three people that tied at the top with 132's. One the first hole of the playoff, Jeff Vandermark hit a 80ft putt to take first. On the third playoff hole, Spencer Nunnelley beat Billy Page with his own 100ft shot that went in.
Our next Course Challenge is at Rapid Run Park on July 28th. Hope to see you there.

On a great day weather wise, 67 people showed up by detour to the Oxford CC. Because much of the Honeysuckle that was on the course has been cut down, the course played easier, but still had some bite at times.
After the discs were thrown Spencer Nunnelley came away with the win, with a score of 92. MU Student Billy Page came in second, he shot a scorching 44 the first round, but could not hold the lead at the end. In Open Masters, John Finnegan won for the second time this season.
The next CC is at Idlewild on Sunday June 24th.

We had 77 people come out to this years New Years Tourney.
The first round was much warmer than the second, although for both rounds saw their fair share of windy conditions.
After the dust settled, we crowned a Champ for the year. David Cox won the Open division with a two round total of 81.
Being Winton Woods, you would expect a few aces. We had three. Shelby Campbell hit 11, John Schengber hit 14 and Ian James hit 10.

CCS Finale at Lincoln Ridge this Saturday November 5. We will play 24 holes the first round and 18 the second.

There is a change this year in the Series Awards Ceremony. In years past
many people have stated it's too long of a day to attend the Series
Awards afterwards at a restaurant, along with other reasons. Thus, the
Awards for the 2011 CCS will be awarded at the first Course Challenge of
the New Year 2012. This way all the people who win will have a larger
gallery and won't have to wait around after the tourney for the
tourney/CCS staff to get everything done.

Congratulations to Dave Marlow and the club for getting this tournament together. It has been through a lot of hard work on Dave's part to get this tournament to happen. Due to several requirements by the park and the city of Covington this CCS event needed to be sanctioned by the PDGA.
Thus, a $2 PDGA fee will be charged and for those not currently a PDGA member, there is a $10 PDGA Event Fee. These PDGA Fees are simply the cost of getting to play in a park where we normally don't get to play.

Men’s Open Division................$27
All other Pro Divisions....................$17
Advanced Divisions.........................$17
Recreational Divisions....$12
Includes the $2 PDGA Fee
Must either be a Current PDGA Member or pay the additional $10 PDGA Event fee to enter. Here's some information about the PDGA $10 Non-Member fee that may be of interest to some of you. When you do this you can become a Supporting Member and receive a lifetime PDGA number, a mini and a rulebook - so you do get something back for your $10 including getting to play in this PDGA event. Also when you become a Supporting Member you can exchange your $10 fee for a $10 discount on a Full Membership. The link below will give you the complete information. This is not done automatically. You need to contact the PDGA at the following link: Supporting PDGA Member
It will be 2 rounds of at least 18 holes - possibly more depending on the number of participants. PDGA members should bring their PDGA membership card as proof of current membership to speed up check-in.
We will be setting up the course between 7:00 and 8:30 AM Sunday. There will be a $2 charge to use Pay-Pal. Registration and check-in the day of the tournament will take place at the Volpenhein Pavilion.

Saturday July 9th at 11 am we will be conducting the ribbon cutting of the new 9 hole course at Harmon Park located in down town Lebanon. This will be a two Tee layout with 2 or more basket locations per hole. Second Tee and basket locations will be finished later this year. This was all possible and thanks to Boy Scout John Ensman and his Father Jeff who contacted Lebanon Administration for projects to work on, and when they saw Disc Golf on the list they quickly jumped at the opportunity. We where then contacted to help with design and planning of the course. Through many challenges we where able to come up with what I think is a great course for an otherwise non-utilized piece of property. We hope you all will find this course to be challenging for all levels of experience.

Due to scheduling difficulties it had to be changed a couple of times. We don't like to do that, but it was unavoidable in this case. We apologize for the inconvenience.
On a wonderfully windy day in March, 54 hardened disc golfers converged at Harbin Park to test their skills against mother nature's gusty personality. All enjoyed the traditional layout of the modified 18 holes that consisted of removing holes 14 through 17 and adding the 4 infamous letter holes. After two rounds of kite flying fun those that managed the windy conditions made it to the top to claim their prize (results here). Pete Caldwell won the Open division with a 4 stroke margin, while Jeff Eades took it in Masters. JP Elam narrowly won Advanced with a 1 stroke lead while Mitch McKelvey won Adv. Masters and Ben Kahut won Rec. Next CCS event is scheduled for April 16th at AJ Jolly in Alexandria which has always shown to be a large turnout event. Thanks go out to all our competitors and our gracious TD's and assistants that make this series worth while and entertaining. Hope to see you all at the next challenge.

GCFDA Raises $2750 for Fairhaven Rescue Mission!

Yes, that's right - the club not only reached it's goal of $2500 but surpassed it by a few hundred. A very big thanks to all the GCFDA members, the officers, the disc golfers who participated, those who made donations and to those who helped to put on this year's successful fundraiser.

A "Big Check" and the actual checks from the GCFDA and others were presented to Fairhaven's CEO David Hammers at the GCFDA's bi-monthly meeting which was at Uno's in Anderson Township on Monday 2/21/11. It was a very uplifting and heartfelt presentation with Dave Hammmers sharing the mission of Fairhaven and some stories of how they help those in need. We then had a discussion about the Icebowls and how we came to choose Fairhaven Rescue Mission. This truly is one of the best things the club does in the community.

A beautiful day, a great disc golf course, and an Icebowl Fundraiser for Fairhaven all made for a turnout of 76 disc golfers for the finale at Lincoln Ridge/Banklick on Saturday 2/12/11. We played 2 rounds of 20 holes each, skipping all the creek holes (14-17), upper tees first round, lowers the second.Cyrus Fuhrman won the Open division in a throw-off with Jeff Vandemark. Jeff Eades took Pro Masters by 3 strokes over Dave Marlow. Justin Ammerman won advanced by a stroke over Mike Naegele. The Advanced Masters division had been hotly contested in the first two Icebowls and this one proceeded to be no different. After 2 rounds of 20, 3 were tied for the lead with Troy Ison taking home the win in a throw-off, Ken Donathan second and Ty Connley third. Sean Christner played his first Icebowl of the year and won the Rec division by 3 strokes over Brian Trapp. Full scores for the Saturday's tourney and the series will be up in a few days.Kenji Cummings hit an ace on hole 9 to win the Ace Pot of $122.This turned out to be a sweet way to end the Icebowl Series. We had a great turnout, Dave Hammers shared a heartwarming but tearful story for the disc golfers, we had a raffle for a basket, raffles for discs and all-in-all just a really good time. One bit of fun was during signups, back to back we had a Fishead and a Fishnet (see picture) sign up! Where else is that going to happen? Here are the results of the raffle drawings: the first name drawn from the pre-registrants of Icebowl #3 for an Icebowl disc and a Star-stamped Star Vulcan was my own, so I threw it back in and then we drew Dave Marlow's; then we drew for the winner of the pre-registrants of all 3 Icebowls for a Fundraiser Dyed Icebowl Katana - Dave Marlow's name was drawn again - he says he never wins anything, well today he did! The drawing for the Innova Discatcher Sport, valued at $200, was won by Ron Godbey. Raffle tickets for the basket were $2 each or 8 for $10, with the proceeds going to Fairhaven.John Kuhns offered up a pair of Merrell shoes for a silent auction with all the proceeds going to Fairhaven and that was won by Jim Ferrarra.2011 Icebowl Krazy Series Winners were: Cyrus Fuhrman, Open; Jeff Eades, Pro Masters; Mike Naegele, Advanced; Ty Connley, Advanced Masters; and Brian Trapp, Recreational. Series winners received an Icebowl Trophy disc dyed by Phil Miller of Phly Dyes and either money or merchandise, depending on Pro or Am division. The 2011 Icebowl Krazy Series was a huge success in raising $2750. We will be presenting a "Big Check" and the actual money/checks to Dave Hammers, CEO of Fairhaven Rescue Mission at the club meeting on 2/21/11 at Uno's in Anderson Township. That would be another good reason to attend the club meeting. Besides the $5 from each entry fee and the mulligan money, we had many people step up and make contributions and I'd like to thank them all. I won't attempt to name them as I know I would forget someone, but a big THANK YOU goes out to you from myself and the GCFDA.

There were several inches of snow on the ground at the beginning of the day, but thanks to Cyrus Fuhrman, we had clean tees. We all really appreciated that. It was cold to start the morning, around 20 degrees and got up to around 39 later in the day, with much of the snow melting. The wind kept it cold the second round however. I'd also like to thank Shaun Marsh for spotting all day on hole 18.
Lance Fair won the Open Divsion by shooting a 41 (-13) the 2nd round to come from behind and take home the win. He seems to like to that as he came from behind in the Boone Icebowl to force a throw-off with eventual winner, Drew Miller.
Jeff Eades took home another win in the Pro Masters/GM division, while Mike Naegele and Brian Trapp won the Advanced and Recreational divisions, respectively. Patty Francis won the Recreational Women's division.
There was a really tight finish in the Advanced Masters/Grandmasters division with Ron Godbey and Ty Connley tied at the end of two rounds with Ron taking home the first place prize winning a 3-hole throw-off. They are also neck and neck for the series title also.
There were 2 aces on the day, Cyrus Fuhrman aced hole 14 and Kevin Hall aced hole 9. Only Cyrus was in the Ace Pot.
I'd like to thank a couple of anonymous donors for their extremely thoughtful giving to our fundraising charity, Fairhaven Rescue Mission. With our pledge dollars from the club and an anonymous donor, we have raised another $194. which brings our current total fundraising amount to $1481. We have set a goal of $2500 for this year.
Adam Jones was on hand to collect clothing from many participants. Thanks to Adam and to those who brought the clothes.
The Icebowl Krazy Series finale is at Lincoln Ridge/Banklick on 2/12/11.

Icebowl Krazy Series #1 at Boone Woods 1/15/11

On Saturday 1/15/11 the GCFDA kicked off the fundraising 2011 Icebowl Krazy Series with the first of three events, at Boone Woods. 48 people participated in the fundraising event which uses $5 of each entry fee, the purchase of mulligans and donations to raise money for Fairhaven Rescue Mission in Covington, Ky. Fairhaven Rescue Mission provides shelter, food, clothing, meals and ministry to thousands of people in the local area.
Dave Hammers, CEO of Fairhaven, addressed the participants before the tournament, expressing his appreciation for what we are doing again this year, have done in the past and his amazement at what we do. Several participants also brought bags of clothing for Fairhaven.
For the first Icebowl we raised a little over $500, not counting some pledges that we have. Our goal is $2500 for the 3 tournaments in the Icebowl Krazy Series.
The day was really a pretty nice day for disc golf. There was snow on the ground in most places, but John Stengber had used a snow blower and special scraper he has to clear the tee pads on Friday, so we were throwing off of nice clean pads due to John. A big thanks to John. With the temperature rising to around 40 degrees during the day, a lot of the snow melted for the second round. There was a pretty steady gusting wind most of the day.
With the addition of three extra holes laid out in the soccer field next to the basketball court, we had a par 63 course and Drew Miller took home the Open championship in a throwoff with Lance Fair, tied at 104, 22 down. Lance shot 14 down the second round to force the throwoff.
In other divisions, Jeff Eades coasted to a 6 stroke win in the Pro Masters/GM division with John Stengber taking second by a stroke over myself, Dan Bayless; JP Elam won the Advanced division and up and comer Brian Trapp took the win in the largest division of the tourney, Recreational; Advanced Masters/GM Ty Connley took that division by 7 strokes over Ron Godbey, who split the Ace Pot with Recreational player Jeremy Ison; Ron aced the last temp hole C and Jeremy aced #14; we had one Recreational woman, Patty Frances and one Advanced Woman participant, Amanda Shawkey, who came out for the first time in a couple of years. Complete tournament results will be up in a few days.
I want to thank Jeff Eades, Dave Marlow, Phil Miller and others who helped to put on this fundraising event as well as all the participants. Also, a thank you to Dave Hammers for coming out and addressing our tournament players. The GCFDA shows that it can do a lot for the community as a whole not just the disc golf community. As the TD for this event I have to say it is a rewarding experience to be a participant in this event that's primary purpose is helping others.
The next Icebowl event in the Series is January 29 at Harbin Park in Fairfield. For more information check out the Cincinnati Events page. If you 'd like to make a donation to Fairhaven through the club and this fundraising event contact Dan Bayless at 859.371.3668.

The 2010 CCS concluded at Lincoln Ridge (Banklick) with great weather and 76 participants. It was a beautiful day for the final of the 2010 CCS. For the first round all 24 holes on the course were played using the upper tees for holes 10, 19, and 21. For the second round 20 holes were used omitting holes 5,6,16, and 17. The lower tees on holes 10, 19 and 21 were used for the second round and the original tee pad was used for hole 18. The winners for the day were: Gary Costa in Open Men; Liz Shooner in Open Women; Jeff Eades in Open Masters; Shaun Fair in Advanced Men; Dawn Osborn in Advanced Women; Gregg Wooten in Advanced Masters; Ryan McMath in Recreational Men; and Patty Francis in Recreational Women.
Those in attendance acknowledged and rememberd Doug Aulick, who recently passed away, with a moment of silence and then everyone went to the field and threw an overhand shot (pictured) in remembrance of Doug. We miss you but you are not forgotten Doug. A CTP split-the-pot was held to raise money for a tree and plaque to be put up at Lincoln Ridge park in honor of Doug. We raised $88 toward this.
We concluded with the Awards presentation at Buffalo Bob's in Independence. Dave Marlow, CCS Coordinator, once again, did an outstanding job in making the CCS trophies and he also had trophy plaques for the 2010 CCS Tournament Directors. This was a really nice touch and very much appreciated. Although we had a very small showing for the Awards, those that were in attendance, applauded the winners. Good food, beverages and comraderie was had by all.

2010 Ace Race Day Glow Mini Golf Summary

It was a beautiful day for the Ace Race Day Glow Mini Event at Boone Woods on Saturday 10/16/10. You couldn't ask for better weather. We had a great turnout: 90 participants for the Ace Race and 75 for the Day Glow. We had some play in one or the other and many who played in both. Then we also had mini golf in between the day round and night round of the Day Glow, which has become a huge hit at this event. The cookout between rounds consisted of hamburgers, pork chops, hot dogs, brats, metts, potato salad, chips, baked beans and pop for all who participated in the Day Glow. Then we had some dessert from Patty and Kindra: cupcakes and cookies. The Awards for the Day Glow were presented at Gold Star on Rt. 18 in Burlington. So once again we had a full day and night of disc golf from about 10 am to 10 pm. You just can't beat that for a disc golf lover. If you missed this year's event, mark it down on your calendar for next year. It's always on a Saturday in October, depending on the scheduling of other local and regional tournaments.
For the Ace Race we had a 3 way tie after the two rounds with one ace and two metals: Joe Mihalek, George Collett and Kevin Vincent. We had a sudden death 4 hole throw off on holes 1, 2, 8 and 9. If no one got an ace on the first three holes it was CTP on 9. We didn't have any aces or metal on the first three so it came down to CTP on hole 9. The first two were wide right and wide left. The winner, Kevin Vincent proceeded to throw a nice one within about 20 feet of the basket to win the Discraft bag of discs. Congratulations to Kevin. Thanks to everyone who came out and made this so much fun. We had a lot of hootin' and hollerin' going on and lots of metal and aces.
At about 2 pm we started getting the names of 75 participants for the Day Glow into two groups: Group A of the more experienced and skilled players and Group B of the less experienced and skilled players. We set up the draw and since we had 75 we had an odd player who got one extra throw per hole. We had set up 3 extra holes out in the soccer field next to the tennis courts. After the first round we had Lance Fair and Anthony Mastriani in the lead with a 16 down. Lance got an ace. After that we had a -14 and a couple -13's with a whole bunch at -9 to -11.
The final round once again belonged to the team of Fair and Mastriani as they bettered their first round score by 1 shooting -17 and this time without an ace for a total of -33 for the 2 rounds. They ran away with it by 7 strokes. Shaun Fair and Austin Spears took second with a total of -26 for the day.
An added attraction at this years event was Jeff Eades CTP Awards for 18 of the 21 holes. These were Ring of Fire type prizes and were awarded at Gold Star along with the rest of the prizes. I think everyone really enjoyed this CTP addition. I would like to thank all those who showed up at Gold Star - we filled the place!
Once again, I believe this was a huge success with a lot of fun had by the participants and plenty by the TD. A big thanks goes out to all who helped to put this on: Discraft for the Ace Race, Alicia Eades for the Day Glow stamp on the disc, Gold Star for putting up with a restaurant full of crazy disc golfers, Jeff Eades for setting up the tees, the mini golf, the CTP's, lights for the baskets and getting the extra baskets, Jughead and Fishnet for their grillin' expertise, Phil Miller for setup and cleanup, Patty Francis and Kindra Montgomery for cookout prep and cleanup, and of course the desserts. I know I'm probably missing some people so if I did thank you too.
Here's the results for the Day Glow. Now, just so you know I may have gotten some team partners mixed up. On the board cards we just had first names, so I struggled on getting a few of them matched up correctly. Let me know and I'll make the corrections. Sorry for the inconvenience. We did have two aces during the Day Glow: Lance Fair and Lee Stephens both on hole C.

Officer Nominations for 2011

At last night's club meeting we had nominations for next year's club officers. The following nominations were made:
President: Drew Miller, Adam Jones
Vice President: Erik Calton
Secretary: Tony Vincent
Treasurer: Dave Marlow
If you would like to nominate someone, contact one of the club officers with the name of who you would like to nominate, what office you are nominating them for and your reasoning. We do ask that you not just flood us with nominations that have no sound reasoning (just to nominate so and so or wouldn't that be funny if he were elected).
At the December meeting 12/13/10, uptstairs at O'Bryon's Irish Pub on Madison Ave. in Obryonville, we will take a few minutes for the outgoing President to present a review of the current year, time-limited talks from the nominees and a short discussion before we cast our votes. Current members are allowed to vote.
This meeting is more social in nature to celebrate the end of the disc golf year and bring in the new one with appetizers provided by the club. As noted in the meeting minutes from 10/11/10 we will also be presenting the Volunteer of the Year Awards. We hope to see you there.

Ace Race Day Glow w/Mini Golf 10/16/2010 at Boone Woods

This event is for everyone, beginner to pro. It is designed for the fun, not really for the competition. It's the 14th year for the Day Glow, and I believe the 4th year we've had the Ace Race included with it.
The Ace Race is in the morning. For $25 you get a package of 2 identical Discraft prototype discs made especially for the Ace Race, plus a SuperColor mini, premium hat, sticker and a die-cast chrome bag tag. A $67 value!
The Day Glow w/mini golf is in the afternoon/night and for $25 you get a custom stamped premium Discraft disc, a glow light and a cookout and a prize payout to 40-50% of the field.
You can participate in just the Ace Race or Day Glow w/Mini Golf or both. Pre-registration is highly recommended for the events so we can have enough packages for everyone and have enough food.
For more information and to sign up click Ace Race Day Glow Event and to hear what people are saying about it or post something yourself check out the Message Board Thread.

Player Interview - David Wright

At 32 years old, David Wright has now been playing disc golf half of his life, first picking up a disc at the ripe old age of 16. He’s now been keeping scores and running the GCFDA leagues for an impressive 8 years. David is a Metallurgist (no need to Google this occupation – it’s an engineer trained in the extraction and refining and alloying and fabrication of metals – duh!). He and his wife live in Lawrenceburg, Indiana.
Favorite course? - Idlewild is my favorite course. I also enjoy playing Embshoff in Delhi since this is where I started playing disc golf.
Favorite disc? - My favorite disc is a Roc. It is the most comfortable and versatile disc I have.
How many aces? - I do not have too many aces, especially for how long I have been playing. I had two aces at Embshoff and one at Woodland Mound in the mid-90’s and have had a dry spell since this year where I have hit #11 at Heritage and #3 at Wilson Park. I did have a fallout on the uphill #6 at Burnet a couple of years ago, which would have been a nice ace.
Any special memories from disc golf? - I have met so many wonderful people and have countless joyful memories over the past 16 years through disc golf and Ultimate Frisbee, which I play with several other disc golfers. I love the 19th hole after a good night of league. The friendships I have gained through the sport outweigh any single event or experience. One funny event was spending a weekend with Pete and Karen Caldwell back in the late ‘90s at a tournament in southern Kentucky. Pete was zooming the car through a dirt field next to the campground not realizing there were random ditches. Luckily, he slammed on the brakes just before we ended up in one of them.
David’s outlook on disc golf is one that disc golfers of all levels can emulate.
Advice? - Advice I would give to new players is focus on control. Distance means nothing if you cannot control it. Long toss with a putter or practice mid-range. If you do take your game to a high level, don’t ignore beginners or other players that look up to you. Always be willing to cordially give advice to those that ask. Every big dog was once a pup!
Leagues run throughout the year and are a great way to get experience. The players are a good bunch of people who are always willing to help beginners. If you’re interested, check out the information under the Wednesday Night League forum.

High School Disc Golf Championships
RESULTS from May 8, 2010

Congratulations are in order for the following teams and individuals! Kenton County Parks & Recreation hosted the eighth High School Disc Golf Championships at Lincoln Ridge (formerly Banklick Woods) on Saturday, May 8.

A total of 15 players participated (down from 53 in ’09).

Team Championship scores are determined by each school's five best individual scores.

The Boys Team Championship traveling trophy was won by Anderson (OH) with a Team score of 630. Congratulations to the members of Anderson High School's championship team: Will McKenzie (T-5), Sam Peterson (9), Chris Matre (10), Scott Rosenberry (11), and Tyler Hugenberg (12). The HSDGC Boys Team Championship record remains at 581 and is shared by two schools: St. Xavier (OH) in 2006 and Anderson (OH) in 2005.

1st Place Team and 8th HSDGC Champions ~ Anderson (OH) ~ 630
2nd Place Team ~ Fairfield (OH) ~ 665

In Individual Championship play, now three-time HSDGC Individual Champion Shaun Fair (A Beka Academy) held off Billy Page (Fairfield) to win by one. Shaun’s tournament course record of 100, which he set in 2007 still stands but he was able to manage the course and conditions to shoot a pair of 52’s. 2nd and 3rd place trophies were won by Billy Page, Fairfield (OH), and Lance Fair (A Beka Academy), respectively.

Closest-to-the-Pin Prizes were donated by Dan Bayless, owner of Disc 'N Dat in Florence, KY. CTP's: Round 1 ~ #4 by Michael Sechrist; #14 Upper by Spencer Nunnelley; Round 2 ~ #8 by Jared Brumley; and #17 (temporary) by Spencer Nunnelley. No Aces were recorded.

2010 Course Challenge Series Kicks Off at Harbin

The sun came out and so did the disc golfers, with an impressive turnout of 96 participants for the first Course Series Challenge of 2010! The course layout was modified to accommodate the large turnout resulting in two rounds consisting of 20 holes. We used the Harbin Pig layout + original 16 and 17 to make a 20 hole layout to accommodate 96 players. Mid 60's and occasional light breeze.
In the Open division, Scott Schmidt jumped out to an early lead in the first round and was able to fend off the crafty veteran Dave Cox, who came in second for the day and Jeremiah Krause rounded out the top three in Open. In the Open Masters, the lefty, Jeff Eades, took home first prize shooting a solid 113 on the day, with John Schengber and Fishnet Dave Gambrell coming in second and third respectively. In the advanced division, Big Billy Page rose to the top shooting a 116 on the day with Steve Cox taking second and Will Clark and Shaun Fair tied for third. In the Advanced masters division, Scott Miller shot a 127 to take first place while Tony Lampert and Mike Day tied for second place. In the Woman’s divisions, Rebecca Cox continues to improve on her game, coming in first in the Open division shooting a 143 on the day. In the Advanced Woman’s division, Tiffany Wildes took first shooting a 168 while Molly Smith took second in her first tournament event! It may have been Tiffany’s first tournament event too. In the Rec Division, Chris Corrado shot an impressive 126 ,taking the lead while Jared Brumley and Rodney Bronner completed the top three in the Rec division for the day. Complete results can be found at Course Challenge Series Event Results.

We greatly appreciate everyone coming out and hope you thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to seeing you out on the course for next month’s course challenge series event at AJ Jolly on April 17.

What a great day for a disc golf tournament. Beautiful weather in the 50's with sun most of the day and 52 participants for the Landmark Disc Golf Challenge #1 at Landmark Church on Glendale Milford Rd. off I-75 on Saturday March 6. This was a fundraiser tournament for the church and to showcase disc golf for the possibility of a permanent course on the church grounds. The course played smoothly and consisted of a variety of shots from short to medium long-distance shots with elevation changes, OB water, OB fences and roads. It was a fun course to play and all seemed to have a great time.
TD's were myself, Dan Bayless and Alan Lane with much help from Jeff Eades, Aaron Brueckman, Phil Miller, Lee Stephens and many more. There were also several disc golfers and other observers who came out during the day to check it out. Phil Miller dyed the trophy discs that were given out to the top 3 finishers in each division. The discs looked great. We had a CTP throwoff for 2nd and 3rd place trophies for those who tied.
If you missed out on this event, talk to someone who was there and see what they thought and look for announcements about the next Landmark Disc Golf Challenge. There's a few more pics here - I didn't get many and several are me trying to get a good shot of the basket by the rock.

GCFDA Raises $2120 for Fairhaven Rescue Mission!

Our 2010 Icebowl Krazy Series was once again a huge success. 141 total particpants throughout the series contributed to the total of $2120 being raised for Fairhaven Rescue Mission in Covington, Kentucky. Plus, we collected a large amount of clothing that was donated also. Thanks to everyone who helped in any way to make this a successful series this year.
The weather on Saturday February 6 for the finale at Lincoln Ridge was definitely Icebowl weather with about 5 inches of snow coming down overnight before the event and 28 degrees (wind chill 15 degrees), getting down to 22 (wind chill 8) when we finished. The winds were 15-20mph. The road into Lincoln Ridge was not plowed when the first early birds got there and were slipping and sliding their way to nowhere. We were finally able to wave down one of the County plows to plow us a path up into the parking lot. Tourney Central was from my car which made it much easier on all I believe. We had 45 participants for this final event and 5 Did Not Finishes (DNF's). We had a few lost discs as could be expected but we had a lot of fun for a good cause.
Dave Cox made it a Triple Play winning Open with 94 for the 2 rounds of 18 holes - he won the first two Icebowls. Tyler Horne, who even drove all the way from Columbus, Ohio tied with Cyrus Fuhrman for second with 97. Jeff Eades also took a Triple Play in Pro Masters/GM with a 102 after winning the first two Icebowls. We had a pretty fair day in the Advanced division with Lance Fair edging out his brother Shaun by a stroke, 105 to 106. Lawrence Justice tied Donovan Go for 3rd with a 109. Ron Godbey took the Advanced Masters/GM division with a 115. Mike Naegele had a 3 stroke win in Novice with a 111 over Chris Behymer at 114.
So, the 2010 Icebowl Krazy Series Champions are: Dave Cox in Open, Jeff Eades in Pro Masters/GM, Lawrence Justice in Advanced, Ron Godbey in Advanced Masters/GM and Mike Naegele taking the Novice championship.
The winner of the Icebowl disc for Pre-registrants was Andrew Baughman and the winner of the Innova Discatcher Traveler was Gerry Stricker.
Below are the results for the Lincoln Ridge Icebowl and the 2010 Icebowl Krazy Series. To be eligible for series champion and/or prizes you needed to play in all 3 Icebowls. We had 16 participants who did that. Each of the Champions received a 1st Place plaque with the full-color Icebowl logo along with prizes or money. $2 of each participants entry went to the series plaques and payout. Thanks to everybody who donated money, time, clothes, keeping score and all the little stuff that helped to make it a success. See you next year. Oh yeah, we did a good job of No Whimps No Whiners!
Pictured are Dan Bayless presenting the "big check" from the GCFDA to Dave Hammers, CEO of Fairhaven Rescue Mission, along with several of the pariticipants. Thanks to Tony Vincent for the pictures. Check out the gallery on the website. I will try to get a few of my own up also.

The second in the Icebowl Krazy Series, fundraising event for Fairhaven Rescue Mission in Covington, was held Saturday, January 23 at Boone Woods in Burlington, Ky. $5 of each entry fee, mulligans sold for $1 each (max 6) and player donations help to raise money for Fairhaven. Dave Hammers, CEO of Fairhaven Rescue Mission, addressed the group describing what Fairhaven does for the community. We had lots of people who also brought clothes for Fairhaven. Thanks to Alan Clore for collecting the clothes.
65 people participated in 5 Divisions: Open, Pro Masters/Grandmasters, Advanced, Novice and Advanced Women. We made some slight changes to the course for the Icebowl because of the muddy conditions and the number of people who would be going up and down a few of the hills on the back 9. We played holes 1-11. We eliminated holes 12-14 and after hole 11, took the bridge across to holes 15 and 16. We then crossed the road and played 3 temporary holes around the soccer field. These 3 holes were each right around 300 feet with some elevation changes and good placements. It seemed everyone enjoyed playing the temp holes. We then proceeded to play holes 17 and 18.
The weather was definitely warmer than the first Icebowl and warmer than the last week or so, but not really what had been forecast. It got cold during the break and started misting a little rain which lasted for the first few holes of the second round, but really a pretty nice day for disc golf.
There was lots of fun and excitement throughout the day and here are some of the highlights: Troy Ison (pictured) aced hole #15 for an Ace Pot of $158, which included a $48 carryover from the Harbin Icebowl - Troy donated $20 of his winnings to Fairhaven; James Javins won the raffle for a 2010 Icebowl disc for pre-registering. All pre-registered players were entered into the raffle. James was a late-night entry, signing up at 1:30 a.m. Saturday morning. See, it does pay to pre-register. We had a CTP Split-the-Pot that was won by John Schengber, with $40 being split with Fairhaven Rescue Mission. We had an unbelievable 5-way playoff for first place in the Novice division, which was won by Mike Naegele on the third hole.
Here's a rundown of the top finishes in each of the divisions: Open: 1st - Dave Cox shooting 86, 2nd - Jim Ferrara 86 and Scott Schmidt 3rd with 89. Pro Masters: Jeff Eades won a tight race to the end with a 92, John Finnegan 2nd 93, and John Schengber 3rd 94. We had a "Fair' battle in the Advanced Division with Shawn and Lance Fair taking the top 2 spots with a 90 and 95 respectively and a 3 way tie for third, Ben Shooner, Lawrence Justice and Joe Javins shooting 96. Ken Donathan took home the win in Advanced Masters/Grandmasters with a 96, Ron Godbey and Tony Lampert tied for 2nd at 101. Karen Farrell won the Advanced Women's division shooting 109. And for that 5 way throwoff in the Novice division we had Mike Naegele taking the win in the playoff on hole 3. The other 4 in the playoff were Spencer Nunnelley, Chris Behymer, Dan Unkraut and Brady Barnett, all tied at 103 after 2 rounds. Brady dropped out after hole 1, Dan Unkraut hole 2, then Mike took a 3 for the win on hole 3 as Chris and Spencer both bogied. What a great finish.
I'd like to thank Co-TD Jeff Eades , Phil Miller, Liz Shooner, and Jim Ferrara for their help in running the tournament, as well as those who brought baskets and others who helped check scores. I will get the complete scores up soon. You can check out some pics from the Boone Icebowl.
After 2 Icebowls we have raised approximately $1300. We are behind in reaching our goal, so let's keep trying and see if we can make that final push when we get to Lincoln Ridge for the finale.
The third and final Icebowl in the series is February 6, 2010 at Lincoln Ridge (formerly Banklick Woods). Signup early, get some friends or co-workers to sponsor you and help the GCFDA to reach its goal to help Fairhaven Rescue Mission. For more information, to signup for Icebowl #3 at Lincoln Ridge or to make a donation to Fairhaven Rescue Mission via this fundraiser go the Icebowl Krazy Series website.

GCFDA 2009 Disc Golf Review by President Dave Marlow The 2009 disc golf year in the GCFDA area was an active one. There were 12 different tournaments during the year, of which 6 were PDGA sanctioned.
Icebowl Krazy Series #1 at Harbin 1/9/09

31 hardy disc golfers came out to the first in the series of Icebowls on Saturday January 9, 2010 at Harbin Disc Golf Course in Fairfield, Ohio. Dan Bayless and Jeff Eades were the tourney's TD's. It was a great day for an Icebowl with temperatures hovering around 19-22°, 4-5 inches of snow on the ground and a few flurries throughout the day. The wind wasn't much of a factor at 7-10 mph. It really wasn't all that cold once you started moving around and playing. There were a few lost discs, but not many. To help with the cold Fishnet Dave Gambrell got us a good fire going with Fairfield Parks, Fishnet Dave and Dan Bayless providing the firewood. A really nice fire kept us good and warm all day - that is while we were next to it anyway. I think the sledders who were there in droves, also liked the fire we had going as there was always a group hanging around the fire. Thanks to Phil Miller and Drew Miller for helping with the scores and anyone else who pitched in. We had 31 participants in 5 divisions, Open, Pro Masters/Grandmasters, Advanced, Advanced Masters/Grandmasters and Novice. Dave Cox took the Open with a hot score of 92. Jeff Eades won Pro Masters/Grandmasters with a 99, Lawrence Justice took Advanced shooting a 105, Tony Lampert won Advanced Masters/Grandmasters with a score of 112 and the Novice division winner was Brady Barnett shooting 113. Congratulations to all the winners of the first 2010 Icebowl. There were no aces on the day, with the ace pot at $48. If there are no aces, the ace pot will roll over to the next Icebowl. If at the end of the 3 Icebowls we haven't had any aces, we will have a throw-off for a CTP split-the-pot. The CTP winner will split the pot with Fairhaven Rescue Mission. We had a CTP Split-the-Pot for the day also and Fishnet Dave won that with $28 going to Dave and $28 going to Fairhaven. We will do this at each Icebowl. We are using an Innova Discatcher Traveler for these CTP's and we will raffle that basket off with any proceeds after the cost of the basket going to Fairhaven. Raffle tickets are $1 each, 6 for $5. As a fundraiser event, $5 of each entry goes to Fairhaven and mulligans were sold $1 each, maximum 3 per round for a total of 6 on the day, so for this Icebowl we raised with entries, mulligans, CTP split-the-pot and extra donations, a total of $370. That's a good start, but we will have to pick it up a bit if we are to reach our goal of $4000. The second in the series is at Boone Woods on January 23, 2010. Signup early, get some friends or co-workers to sponsor you and help the GCFDA to reach its goal of $4000 raised for Fairhaven Rescue Mission. For more information, to signup for Icebowl #2 at Boone Woods or to make a donation to Fairhaven Rescue Mission via this fundraiser go the Icebowl Krazy Series website.

The Annual New Years Day Tourney at Winton Woods was a huge success and we mean HUGE - as in number of participants, amount of fun and the huge fire we had. We do have some low scores to talk about also. We had some great TD's in Dave Marlow, Alan Clore and Liz Shooner. There were lots of others who helped out. Thanks to everybody who did.
