Icebowl Krazy Series #2 at Boone Woods

The second in the Icebowl Krazy Series, fundraising event for Fairhaven Rescue Mission in Covington, was held Saturday, January 23 at Boone Woods in Burlington, Ky. $5 of each entry fee, mulligans sold for $1 each (max 6) and player donations help to raise money for Fairhaven. Dave Hammers, CEO of Fairhaven Rescue Mission, addressed the group describing what Fairhaven does for the community. We had lots of people who also brought clothes for Fairhaven. Thanks to Alan Clore for collecting the clothes.
65 people participated in 5 Divisions: Open, Pro Masters/Grandmasters, Advanced, Novice and Advanced Women. We made some slight changes to the course for the Icebowl because of the muddy conditions and the number of people who would be going up and down a few of the hills on the back 9. We played holes 1-11. We eliminated holes 12-14 and after hole 11, took the bridge across to holes 15 and 16. We then crossed the road and played 3 temporary holes around the soccer field. These 3 holes were each right around 300 feet with some elevation changes and good placements. It seemed everyone enjoyed playing the temp holes. We then proceeded to play holes 17 and 18.
The weather was definitely warmer than the first Icebowl and warmer than the last week or so, but not really what had been forecast. It got cold during the break and started misting a little rain which lasted for the first few holes of the second round, but really a pretty nice day for disc golf.
There was lots of fun and excitement throughout the day and here are some of the highlights: Troy Ison (pictured) aced hole #15 for an Ace Pot of $158, which included a $48 carryover from the Harbin Icebowl - Troy donated $20 of his winnings to Fairhaven; James Javins won the raffle for a 2010 Icebowl disc for pre-registering. All pre-registered players were entered into the raffle. James was a late-night entry, signing up at 1:30 a.m. Saturday morning. See, it does pay to pre-register. We had a CTP Split-the-Pot that was won by John Schengber, with $40 being split with Fairhaven Rescue Mission. We had an unbelievable 5-way playoff for first place in the Novice division, which was won by Mike Naegele on the third hole.
Here's a rundown of the top finishes in each of the divisions: Open: 1st - Dave Cox shooting 86, 2nd - Jim Ferrara 86 and Scott Schmidt 3rd with 89. Pro Masters: Jeff Eades won a tight race to the end with a 92, John Finnegan 2nd 93, and John Schengber 3rd 94. We had a "Fair' battle in the Advanced Division with Shawn and Lance Fair taking the top 2 spots with a 90 and 95 respectively and a 3 way tie for third, Ben Shooner, Lawrence Justice and Joe Javins shooting 96. Ken Donathan took home the win in Advanced Masters/Grandmasters with a 96, Ron Godbey and Tony Lampert tied for 2nd at 101. Karen Farrell won the Advanced Women's division shooting 109. And for that 5 way throwoff in the Novice division we had Mike Naegele taking the win in the playoff on hole 3. The other 4 in the playoff were Spencer Nunnelley, Chris Behymer, Dan Unkraut and Brady Barnett, all tied at 103 after 2 rounds. Brady dropped out after hole 1, Dan Unkraut hole 2, then Mike took a 3 for the win on hole 3 as Chris and Spencer both bogied. What a great finish.
I'd like to thank Co-TD Jeff Eades , Phil Miller, Liz Shooner, and Jim Ferrara for their help in running the tournament, as well as those who brought baskets and others who helped check scores. I will get the complete scores up soon. You can check out some pics from the Boone Icebowl.
After 2 Icebowls we have raised approximately $1300. We are behind in reaching our goal, so let's keep trying and see if we can make that final push when we get to Lincoln Ridge for the finale.
The third and final Icebowl in the series is February 6, 2010 at Lincoln Ridge (formerly Banklick Woods). Signup early, get some friends or co-workers to sponsor you and help the GCFDA to reach its goal to help Fairhaven Rescue Mission. For more information, to signup for Icebowl #3 at Lincoln Ridge or to make a donation to Fairhaven Rescue Mission via this fundraiser go the Icebowl Krazy Series website.

GCFDA Member Highlight

After a brief stint in the Carolinas, the Greater Cincinnati area has rejoiced the return of 37-year old Jim Stilgenbauer. Jim is a Manager at Paycor, he lives in Anderson Township with his wife Kirsten and two sons – Nathan, 7, and Andrew, 5. Jim is a lifetime member of the GCFDA.

First exposure to disc golf: I first played disc golf at Woodland Mound as a kid during the '80's. It was definitely "frisbee golf" then. I used to actually play at Woodland with the kicker for the Bengals at the time, Jim Breech, and his family, who lived in my neighborhood in beautiful Mt. Carmel. I started getting into competitive disc golf in 1992, after my friend Kevin Bessenbach met Claus Tandrup at World's Biggest Weekend and we discovered the GCFDA-ran tournaments. Life was never the same after that.

Favorite courses: Sentimental: Woodland Mound. Favorite that Doesn't Exist: Rapid Run. Most Fun: Banklick. If I had to pick one: Idlewild.

Favorite Tournaments: I really like the World Championships, because it’s such a grueling week and you have to play well for an extended period of time. The USDGC is unmatched by light years as far as a truly professional event. Locally it’s the BGO, BHMO, and Flying Pig.

Aces: Probably around 40 aces, mostly due to playing at Woodland Mound so much. I've won 3 mountain bikes due to aces during special competitions. I've had 3 aces in World Championship play also.

Disc Golf now...I don't get to play a lot right now, though I still think about making a comeback. I play more casual rounds with people new to the sport, which is fun after the intensity of trying to be a Pro for so long.

Other Hobbies: As I'm getting older, I'm trying to stay in better shape so I've been working out at a great Crossfit gym in Oakley called Crossfit Nasti. Highly recommend it.

Words of Advice: Read a book about the mental game of ball golf. Develop a pre-shot routine that allows you truly imagine how the shot will look and feel. Whatever you do should also help you relax and focus. Always use your routine in practice. Don't spend too much time trying to throw further...at a certain point, your body will only allow you to throw so far...you can probably make many more improvements in your putting, accuracy, and mid-range shots. Figure out a way to appreciate the good shots of your competitors...there is a calming effect and positive energy when you're not hoping your competitors fail. Much easier said than done when you want to win badly.

Icebowl Krazy Series #1 at Harbin 1/9/09

31 hardy disc golfers came out to the first in the series of Icebowls on Saturday January 9, 2010 at Harbin Disc Golf Course in Fairfield, Ohio. Dan Bayless and Jeff Eades were the tourney's TD's. It was a great day for an Icebowl with temperatures hovering around 19-22°, 4-5 inches of snow on the ground and a few flurries throughout the day. The wind wasn't much of a factor at 7-10 mph. It really wasn't all that cold once you started moving around and playing. There were a few lost discs, but not many. To help with the cold Fishnet Dave Gambrell got us a good fire going with Fairfield Parks, Fishnet Dave and Dan Bayless providing the firewood. A really nice fire kept us good and warm all day - that is while we were next to it anyway. I think the sledders who were there in droves, also liked the fire we had going as there was always a group hanging around the fire. Thanks to Phil Miller and Drew Miller for helping with the scores and anyone else who pitched in. We had 31 participants in 5 divisions, Open, Pro Masters/Grandmasters, Advanced, Advanced Masters/Grandmasters and Novice. Dave Cox took the Open with a hot score of 92. Jeff Eades won Pro Masters/Grandmasters with a 99, Lawrence Justice took Advanced shooting a 105, Tony Lampert won Advanced Masters/Grandmasters with a score of 112 and the Novice division winner was Brady Barnett shooting 113. Congratulations to all the winners of the first 2010 Icebowl. There were no aces on the day, with the ace pot at $48. If there are no aces, the ace pot will roll over to the next Icebowl. If at the end of the 3 Icebowls we haven't had any aces, we will have a throw-off for a CTP split-the-pot. The CTP winner will split the pot with Fairhaven Rescue Mission. We had a CTP Split-the-Pot for the day also and Fishnet Dave won that with $28 going to Dave and $28 going to Fairhaven. We will do this at each Icebowl. We are using an Innova Discatcher Traveler for these CTP's and we will raffle that basket off with any proceeds after the cost of the basket going to Fairhaven. Raffle tickets are $1 each, 6 for $5. As a fundraiser event, $5 of each entry goes to Fairhaven and mulligans were sold $1 each, maximum 3 per round for a total of 6 on the day, so for this Icebowl we raised with entries, mulligans, CTP split-the-pot and extra donations, a total of $370. That's a good start, but we will have to pick it up a bit if we are to reach our goal of $4000. The second in the series is at Boone Woods on January 23, 2010. Signup early, get some friends or co-workers to sponsor you and help the GCFDA to reach its goal of $4000 raised for Fairhaven Rescue Mission. For more information, to signup for Icebowl #2 at Boone Woods or to make a donation to Fairhaven Rescue Mission via this fundraiser go the Icebowl Krazy Series website.

The Annual New Years Day Tourney at Winton Woods was a huge success and we mean HUGE - as in number of participants, amount of fun and the huge fire we had. We do have some low scores to talk about also. We had some great TD's in Dave Marlow, Alan Clore and Liz Shooner. There were lots of others who helped out. Thanks to everybody who did.
